Source: Muschamp to coach Gators
A person familiar with the decision says Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has accepted an offer to be the head coach at Florida. Muschamp, who just finished his third season at Texas, where he was the head-coach-in-waiting to succeed Mack Brown, replaces Urban Meyer as Gators coach. The person confirming the move last night spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak in advance of the formal announcement.
Navy beats Army
Ricky Dobbs threw the longest TD pass (77 yards) in the 111-year history of the Army-Navy game, Wyatt Middleton had the longest fumble return (98 yards) in school history as the Midshipmen extended their winning streak against Army to nine straight with a 31-17 victory at Lincoln Financial Field. Dobbs passed for 186 yards and two touchdowns against the Black Knights (6-6). Dobbs turned the ball over four times but also ran for a team-high 54 yards for Navy (9-3).
SKIING
Ligety wins World Cup giant slalom
American Ted Ligety dominated his rivals to win the World Cup giant slalom in Val D'Isere, France. Coming off his win in giant slalom at Beaver Creek, Colo., last weekend, Ligety had a flawless run on the Face de Bellevarde and finished in 1 minute, 11.37 seconds. Bode Miller skied out after just a few gates while local favorite Jean-Baptiste Grange of France also went out after three gates.
GOLF
Champions Tour players Fred Funk and Kenny Perry shot a 10-under 62 in better-ball play for a share of the second-round lead in the Shark Shootout in Naples, Fla., with defending champions Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly.
Gates on top Down Under
American Bobby Gates shot a 1-under 71 in windy conditions to maintain a one-stroke lead after the third round of the Australian PGA. Gates finished with a 10-foot par putt after missing the 18th green with his approach.
Teen Korda has two-stroke edge
Florida teen Jessica Korda shot a 3-under 69 to take a two-stroke lead over Aree Song with one round left in the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla. Korda, 17, playing as an amateur, had a 9-under 279 total at LPGA International. She's the daughter of former tennis star Petr Korda.
