COLLEGES
UConn run at No. 1 over
Connecticut's 51-week hold on the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press women's basketball poll has come to an end, following Thursday's loss at Stanford, which broke the Huskies' 90-game win streak.
Baylor, which lost, 65-64, at Connecticut in mid-November, is No. 1 for the first time, with 23 first-place votes.
UConn got 14 first-place votes. Stanford moved up five spots to No. 4. St. John's is No. 18.
Taurasi could face ban
WNBA star Diana Taurasi's backup doping sample came back positive for the banned stimulant modafinil and she faces a possible two-year ban, Turkish news reports said.
UMBC tops SBU
Hicksville's Michelle Kurowski had 19 points and eight rebounds and Erin Brown 19 points for Maryland-Baltimore County (6-7, 1-0 America East) in a 65-52 win at Stony Brook. Kirsten Jeter had 14 points and 14 rebounds for SBU (3-10, 0-1).

Rockies lock up Gonzalez
National League batting champion Carlos Gonzalez (.336, 34 homers, 117 RBIs in 2010) and the Colorado Rockies have agreed to a seven-year, $80-million contract, pending a physical.
Simon turns himself in
Orioles reliever Alfredo Simon surrendered to police in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to face an involuntary manslaughter charge in a fatal shooting New Year's Eve. A judge ruled that Simon could be held for up to a year pending trial.
LeBron, Wade roll
LeBron James had 38 points and nine rebounds and Dwyane Wade 31 points and 11 boards in Miami's 96-82 victory in Charlotte . . . Paul Pierce had 23 points and Rajon Rondo 16 assists as host Boston erased a double-digit deficit in a 96-93 victory over Minnesota . . .
