COLLEGESWeis named new head coach at Kansas

Former Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis has been hired by Kansas University. Weis will be introduced during a news conference Friday. He'll try to rebuild a program that floundered under Turner Gill. Weis is finishing his first season as offensive coordinator at Florida . . . Pete Mangurian will be the new head coach of Columbia's football team, the athletic department confirmed. Mangurian, who was head coach at Cornell from 1998-2000, has been a long time NFL assistant, including with the Giants.

 

Storm guard Lindsey to transfer

St. John's sophomore guard Nurideen Lindsey will transfer to another Division I school at the end of the fall semester, Red Storm coach Steve Lavin announced. Lindsey (11.8) was St. John's third leading scorer and averaged 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals.

 

SBU women fall to LIU in OT

Kiara Evans, Ashley Palmer and Ebony Davis each had 15 points for LIU in a 66-59 overtime win over Stony Brook (1-7) in a non-conference game. Kellie Krueger had 12 points and eight rebounds and Jessica Previlon chipped in 10 points for Stony Brook.

GOLFMcIlroy challenges in Dubai

Rory McIlroy shot a 30 on the back nine on his way to a 66 at the Dubai World Championship. The 22-year-old finished two strokes behind leader Peter Hanson. World No. 1 Luke Donald shot a 72. -- AP
