NBAThorn joins 76ers

Rod Thorn and Ed Stefanski once teamed to build New Jersey into NBA championship contenders. Reunited in Philly, the front-office pair will try and resuscitate the 76ers. Stefanski failed in three years to shape the Sixers into winners, so Thorn was brought in Thursday as team president, hopeful the tag-team style of management will lead them back into the playoffs and their first championship since 1983. Stefanski will stay as general manager.

Shon beaten in Amateur

Kelly Shon's run at the U.S Women's Amateur ended Thursday afternoon when she lost in the third round at the Charlotte Country Club. Shon, of Port Washington, won her morning match against Canadian Nicole Vandermade, 2 and 1, before losing in the afternoon to another Canadian, Stephanie Sherlock, 3 and 1.

A person familiar with David Beckham's plans says the former England captain will reject the chance to play in one final match for his country. The person told The Associated Press that "it would seem strange to say you are not retiring then to signal your retirement in a benefit match." Beckham has yet to announce his plans. Coach Fabio Capello, who had not spoken to Beckham, announced Wednesday that the 35-year-old Beckham was too old to continue playing competitively for England, but offered him one last appearance in an exhibition match. The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder said previously that he wanted to continue to play for England. He was forced out of the 2010 World Cup by a ruptured Achilles tendon. - AP
