Donald leads at Hilton Head

Luke Donald moved a step closer to the No. 1 ranking Friday, shooting a 6-under 65 on Friday to take the lead halfway through The Heritage at Hilton Head Island , S.C. Donald is ranked third now, behind No. 1 Martin Kaymer and No. 2 Lee Westwood. However, Donald would jump to the top with a win at Harbour Town. Donald finished 36 holes at 10-under 132 for a one-shot edge over first-round leader Garrett Willis (69). Masters runner-up Jason Day (65), defending champion Jim Furyk (66), Camilo Villegas (68) and Chad Campbell (69) were 8 under.

Two teams tied at Savannah

Tom Kite and Gil Morgan shot 10-under 62 and were tied with Ted Schulz and Gary Hallberg with a one-shot lead over several teams in the first round of the best-ball Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf at Savannah, Ga.


Hofstra women triumph

Hofstra's women won their first CAA game of the season ( 5-9, 1-4) with a 16-7 win over George Mason at Shuart Stadium. Jill Maier scored five goals on the way to the Pride's 9-2 halftime lead.

BASEBALLDucks game postponed

The Ducks' spring training game against the Bridgeport Bluefish on Saturday at Bethpage Ballpark has been postponed because of inclement weather. The game will be played Tuesday at 11:05 a.m. Tickets for Saturday's game are good for the rescheduled game Tuesday.

COLLEGE BASKETBALLLarranaga takes Miami job

Jim Larranaga has taken the Miami Hurricanes' basketball job after 14 years at George Mason, including an improbable run to the Final Four in 2006. George Mason athletic director Tom O'Connor said Larranaga called to say he has accepted Miami's offer. Larranaga, 61, went 273-164 with the Patriots, setting a school record for victories, and led them to five NCAA Tournament berths. This season his team went 27-7 and reached the third round of the tournament before losing to Ohio State. -- AP
