Hawks dump Woodson after six years

Mike Woodson is out as coach of the Atlanta Hawks after the team was swept in the second round of the playoffs by the Orlando Magic. General manager Rick Sund said Friday the team will not offer Woodson a new contract. He coached the Hawks for six seasons, and they improved their record every year. Atlanta won 53 games this season, the most since 1996-97, and captured the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Chandler has hernia surgery

The Knicks' Wilson Chandler had surgery to repair a sports hernia, which was an optional procedure to help repair a left groin issue that caused him to miss the final 15 games of the season. Chandler had surgery on April 14 to clean out scar tissue in his left ankle. He was expected to be able to begin his offseason conditioning work in June and, now with the hernia surgery, Chandler won't be back on a basketball court until July. Last year, Chandler in early June had surgery on his left ankle to remove bone spurs and wasn't able to begin his offseason conditioning program until August. The shorter summer impacted not only his conditioning, but the development of the 23-year old swingman, who has improved his scoring in each of his first three NBA seasons.

Cofield signs tender with Giants

Barry Cofield has signed his one-year tender offer from the Giants, the last of the team's restricted free agents to do so. The defensive tackle will earn $1.759 million in 2010. The Giants nearly traded Cofield to the Saints during the draft but have recently assured him that they are no longer considering trade offers. Cofield had expressed frustration with the uncapped NFL season which prevented him from becoming an unrestricted free agent and negotiating a long-term contract with a signing bonus.
