COLLEGESTar Heel stars banned
North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin was kicked off the team Monday and the school said the NCAA has declared receiver Greg Little and defensive end Robert Quinn permanently ineligible.
The announcements came as part of a probe into whether players received improper benefits from agents. The NCAA provided preliminary information that Austin received between $10,000 and $13,000.
Austin, a senior, and Quinn, a junior, are projected first-round draft picks.
Broncos depleted
Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has ruled out safeties Brian Dawkins (knee) and Darcel McBath (ankle) and cornerback Andre' Goodman (thigh) along with pass rusher Robert Ayers (leg) and special teams captain Wesley Woodyard (hamstring) for Sunday's game against the Jets . . . Rams receiver Mark Clayton won't return this season after suffering a torn patellar tendon in his right knee in Sunday's 44-6 loss in Detroit.

Preliminary tests showed Thrashers goalie Ondrej Pavelec's collapse in the season opener Friday was a fainting spell.
Stars' Ribeiro arrested
Stars forward Mike Ribeiro, who scored the key goal in Saturday's shootout win over the Islanders, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication at a suburban Dallas restaurant. - AP
