Domestic violence charge
against Manny in Florida
Florida prosecutors have formally charged former World Series MVP Manny Ramirez with domestic violence. The Broward State Attorney's office filed the misdemeanor charge Thursday. The 39-year-old retired slugger was arrested Sept. 12 after his wife told deputies Ramirez slapped her in the face. Authorities say Ramirez denied hitting his wife. Ramirez was MVP of the 2004 World Series for the Red Sox. He retired in April from Tampa Bay rather than face a 100-game suspension after testing positive a second time for a performance-enhancing substance. Ramirez is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 14.
GOLFLPGA OKs Lexi
Teenage sensation Lexi Thompson will be going to work full-time on the LPGA Tour next year. The 16-year-old Thompson asked the LPGA to waive its requirement that members be at least 18 to join. LPGA commissioner Mike Whan approved the petition on Friday, one day after Thompson filed it. Thompson won the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama this month, becoming the youngest winner in LPGA history. Whan describes Thompson as a unique talent who already has shown maturity.
Henrik shines at home
Henrik Lundqvist helped the Rangers beat his former Swedish club Frolunda, 4-2, in a preseason homecoming game that pitted him against twin brother Joel in Goteborg, Sweden. Lundqvist received a long standing ovation from the sellout crowd at Scandinavium Arena before the game. He responded by blanking his former team on four straight penalties in the first five minutes of the second period. Lundqvist played for Frolunda for five years, leading the club to two Swedish titles before joining the Rangers in 2005. -- AP
