Artest banned one game

Lakers forward Ron Artest has been suspended from Game 3 of Los Angeles' second-round series against the Dallas Mavericks tonight. Artest was punished by the NBA for a forearm shot to the face of Mavericks guard J.J. Barea with 24 seconds left in Game 2 on Wednesday night. Artest was ejected immediately, and the league said he also would be assessed a flagrant foul. The Lakers trail the Mavericks 0-2 after losing both games in Los Angeles.

Canucks top Predators

Ryan Kesler broke a tie with a power-play goal at 7:28 of the third period, and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Predators, 4-2, in Nashville to take a 3-1 lead in their Western Conference semifinal series.

Haas leads at Charlotte

Bill Haas made easy birdies on the par 5s and didn't run into any problems at the Wells Fargo Championship at Charlotte as he matched the tournament record for low opening round with an 8-under 64 and a two-shot lead. Defending champion Rory McIlroy opened with a 75 and was 11 shots behind . . . Tom Lehman shot a bogey-free 5-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead in the first round of the Regions Tradition at Birmingham, Ala. Nick Price, Wayne Levi, Mark Calcavecchia and Chien-Soon Lu all shot 68s.

Goerges upsets Wozniacki

Julia Goerges of Germany upset Caroline Wozniacki in a second straight tournament, ousting the top-ranked Dane, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, in the third round of the Madrid Open.

Novak Djokovic extended his season-opening winning streak to 29 matches at Madrid, equaling the best start in men's tennis since Ivan Lendl in 1986. The Australian Open champion won all 21 of his first service points to beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 6-2 and advance to the quarterfinals.

Army-Rutgers at Stadium

Army and Rutgers will play at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 12. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.

Williams retires from Terps

Gary Williams announced his retirement as Maryland basketball coach, ending a 33-year career that saw him lead the Terps to the 2002 national championship. Williams coached for 33 years, the last 22 at Maryland, where he played as a guard from 1964-67. -- AP
