Golf greats attend Seve funeral

To the mournful wail of a lone bagpipe, some of Europe's greatest golfers joined family, friends and local residents Wednesday at the funeral of Seve Ballesteros, paying an emotional final tribute to the dynamic Spaniard who revived the European game. Ryder Cup captains Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam, Sam Torrance and Jose Maria Olazabal and players including Miguel Angel Jimenez marched together in silence as part of the procession from Ballesteros' family home to the church of San Pedro de Pedrena.

Jockey faced cocaine charge

The coroner's office says it is awaiting toxicology results on jockey Michael Baze, who was found dead in his vehicle at Churchill Downs on Tuesday and had been scheduled to go to court on a cocaine charge. Court records show the 24-year-old jockey from Glendora, Calif., was scheduled for a preliminary hearing today after being charged with first-degree possession of cocaine in November.

 

Albarado to get reward

Jockey Robby Albarado, who missed out on riding eventual winner Animal Kingdom in the Kentucky Derby, is going to receive payouts from winning rider John Velazquez and winning owner Barry Irwin of Team Valor International. Irwin said he will match the undisclosed portion of money that Velazquez will donate.

COLLEGE FOOTBALLFiesta Bowl fined $1 million

The Fiesta Bowl will be allowed to remain part of the Bowl Championship Series, though it must pay a $1 million fine for apparent illegal campaign contributions and inappropriate spending. The BCS presidential oversight committee also attached several administrative conditions to monitor the program.

Jagr leads Czechs over U.S.

Jaromir Jagr, the 39-year-old former NHL star, scored a hat trick to lead the defending champion Czech Republic to a 4-0 win over the Americans in the quarterfinals of the ice hockey world championship. -- AP

Pride beats Delaware in tourney

Olivia Galati threw a one-hit shutout and rightfielder Tessa Ziemba was 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs as host Hofstra earned a 9-0, five-inning win over Delaware in the first round of the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association softball tournament. Hofstra will play at Georgia State at noon today. Georgia State defeated Towson 3-2 on a home run in the 12th inning.
