Ex-LIer Atwal a shot back
Garrett Willis had a run of six straight birdies for a 7-under 64 and a one-stroke lead yesterday at The Heritagein Hilton Head Island, S.C. Willis was a shot in front of former Long Islander Arjun Atwal, Matt Bettencourt, Chad Campbell and Tim Herron at Harbour Town Golf Links. Mark Wilson, Camilo Villegas and 2009 Heritage champion Brian Gay were two strokes back. Luke Donald, the world's No. 3 player, topped a group at 67. Donald could become No. 1 with a win.
TENNIS
Wozniacki gains in Germany
Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki reeled off 10 straight games to rally for a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Andrea Petkovic and a place in the Porsche Grand Prix semifinals in Stuttgart, Germany. Wozniacki next plays Agnieszka Radwanska, who beat Kristina Barrois, 7-5, 6-3. Sam Stosur advanced with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over second-seeded Vera Zvonareva. Stosur next plays Julia Goerges, who edged Sabine Lisicki, 6-4, 6-4.
Nadal-Monfils in quarters
Rafael Nadal cruised past Santiago Giraldo of Colombia, 6-3, 6-1, to set up a quarterfinal against Gael Monfils at the Barcelona Open. Monfils beat fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet, 6-4, 7-6 (7).
HOCKEY
Glavine eyes Thrashers
Former Braves pitcher Tom Glavine says he hopes to organize an ownership group that would keep the NHL Thrashers in Atlanta. Bruce Levenson, one of the lead owners seeking to sell the Thrashers, says Glavine has expressed interest in the team. Glavine played high school hockey and baseball in Concord, Mass., and was drafted in both sports before winning 305 games with the Braves and Mets. Glavine told an Atlanta radio station that he's "trying on my end" but that he makes "no promises."
