NBANuggets halt Clippers streak at 17
Danilo Gallinari led six Nuggets players in double figures with 17 points and Denver stopped the Los Angeles Clippers' franchise-record 17-game winning streak with a 92-78 victory Tuesday night. Kenneth Faried added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who won their eighth in a row at home.
The Clippers, whose point total was two above their season-low, were hurt by poor shooting from three-point range (5 of 29, 17.2 percent) and the free throw line (13 of 29, 44.8 percent). They were led by Blake Griffin and Eric Bledsoe, who had 12 points apiece.
Andre Miller, starting in place of point guard Ty Lawson, had 12 points and 12 assists for the Nuggets. Lawson, the team said, has been bothered by tightness in his left Achilles tendon for the past week, forcing him to miss a game for the first time this season . . .
Vince Carter scored 23 points, O.J. Mayo and Darren Collison 15 each to help the Dallas Mavericks break their six-game losing streak with a 103-94 win over the Washington Wizards.
sandusky scandalState to fight Penn St. sanctions
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett said Tuesday he plans to sue the NCAA in federal court over sanctions imposed against Penn State in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal. The Republican governor scheduled a news conference for Wednesday on Penn State's campus in State College to announce the filing in U.S. District Court in Harrisburg.The sanctions, agreed to by the university in July, included a $60-million fine that would be used nationally to finance child abuse prevention grants.

Marquette defeats UConn
Junior Cadougan scored 18 points -- including a buzzer-beating, tying three-pointer at the end of regulation -- to lead Marquette to a 82-76 overtime win over Connecticut in the Big East Conference opener for both teams. Davante Gardner added 18 points off the bench for the Golden Eagles (10-3). Vander Blue scored 13 points as Marquette won its 17th in a row at home. Shabazz Napier had 29 points with eight rebounds for Connecticut (10-3, 0-1).

Cundiff to vie with 49ers' Akers
The San Francisco 49ers signed kicker Billy Cundiff to compete with struggling veteran David Akers. Cundiff was released by the Washington Redskins on Oct. 9 after missing 5 of his 12 field-goal attempts. Akers, who made 44 of 52 attempts in his sensational 2011 season and first year with San Francisco, is just 29-for-42 this year.BASEBALLIndians pick up righty Myers
The Cleveland Indians have agreed to terms with free-agent righthander Brett Myers on a one-year contract. Myers, who pitched for Houston and the Chicago White Sox last season, will get a chance to win a spot in Cleveland's starting rotation. Myers, 32, went 3-4 with a 3.14 ERA in 35 relief appearances with the White Sox, who acquired him in a July trade with the Astros.
