Kvitova ousts Wozniacki

Petra Kvitova dominated top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki at the WTA Championships Thursday in Istanbul, winning, 6-4, 6-2, to hand the Dane her second loss at the season-ending tournament. Kvitova hit 36 winners compared with six for Wozniacki, who never earned a break point. Victoria Azarenka became the first player to qualify for the semifinals after a 6-2, 6-2 win over Li Na.

GOLFMcIlroy leads big-money event

U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy shot an 8-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead in the Shanghai Masters, the lucrative invitational tournament that isn't sanctioned by any of the major tours. The 30 players are vying for the $2-million first prize, the richest in golf.

Allenby leads in Malaysia

Australia's Robert Allenby shot an 8-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead over Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas after the first round of the Asia Pacific Classic in Selangor, Malaysia.

NFLMetal detectors at stadiums

Security personnel will begin using hand-held metal detectors Nov. 20 to screen fans, media and working personnel before they enter NFL stadiums . . . Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford worked with the first team at practice, a sign his injured right ankle is improving.

NHLJets top Flyers, 9-8

Andrew Ladd scored the game-winner with 1:06 remaining on a one-timer from close range to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 9-8 victory over the host Philadelphia Flyers. Philadelphia's Danny Briere and James van Riemsdyk each had two goals in a game in which 15 players scored.

19 in a row for Rapid Redux

Rapid Redux tied a North American thoroughbred record with his 19th consecutive victory. The 5-year-old gelding won a $7,500 starter allowance at Laurel Park to tie the mark held by 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta and Peppers Pride.
