Garrett drafted by Reds

Amir Garrett, a freshman on the St. John's University basketball squad, parlayed his 96-mph fastball into a $1-million signing bonus with baseball's Cincinnati Reds.

Garrett, a lefthanded pitcher, was picked by the Reds in the 22nd round of the June 7 draft and signed the contract on Monday, according to an emailed release from the university.

The 6-6, 190-pound forward from Los Angeles will attend St. John's in the fall to play basketball. He'll then turn to baseball next year as a member of the Reds' farm system. "Not everyone gets to play two sports they love," Garrett, 19, wrote in a statement. "I'm excited to play in the Reds' organization but definitely excited to play at St. John's. I'll be able to handle business on campus during the school year and then for Cincinnati." -- Bloomberg News

Report: Turiaf breaks hand

According to a report by a European sports website, Knicks center Ronny Turiaf suffered a broken bone in his hand while playing for France on Monday against Britain in an Olympic Test event in London. MVP247.com, a London-based basketball magazine, said tests revealed the injury and Turiaf is expected to miss the upcoming EuroBasket tournament.

Lions' Suh fined $20,000

Ndamukong Suh was fined $20,000 by the NFL for a hit on Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton, the third penalty of its kind for the Detroit Lions defensive tackle in the past year. The reigning defensive rookie of the year didn't like it much: He responded on his Twitter account before practice: "$20,000REALLY???!!!"

Sore Serena skips tourney

Serena Williams woke up with a sore and swollen right big toe, prompting her to withdraw from the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio -- the latest in her long streak of foot problems and setbacks. Williams had won two straight tournaments at Stanford and Toronto, and her win on Tuesday night at the tournament was her seventh match in eight days. Sister Venus Williams withdrew before the start because of a virus. -- AP
