FIGURE SKATING
Countries seeking to replace Japan
Six countries have put in bids to replace Japan as host of the world figure skating championships following the earthquake and tsunami. International Skating Union president Ottavio Cinquanta told The Associated Press that the bids are from the United States (Colorado Springs or Lake Placid), Russia (Moscow), Canada (Vancouver, British Columbia), Finland (Turku), Croatia and Austria. Russia appears to be the leading candidate, with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin having spoken in favor of the bid Tuesday, saying "this is not a very expensive event and we are capable of taking care of all the expenses." The ISU council will vote soon on the site and determine the dates in late April or early May. The worlds were scheduled to begin Monday in Tokyo.
COLLEGE HOOPS
Friars hire Cooley
Providence has hired former Fairfield coach Ed Cooley to replace the fired Keno Davis. Cooley led the Stags to a school-record 25 wins and a MAAC regular-season championship this year. Cooley's final game was a loss to Kent State in the NIT.
Gay lost to surgery
The Grizzlies have announced that forward Rudy Gay will have season-ending surgery on his left shoulder.

Rice honorary chair
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will serve as honorary chairperson for the Champions Tour's Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek near her hometown. The Birmingham native is a Shoal Creek member. -- AP
