TOUR DE FRANCE

Costa takes eighth stage

Portuguese rider Rui Alberto Costa won the eighth stage of the Tour de France after withstanding a late attack from Philippe Gilbert in the final climb to Super-Besse, and Thor Hushovd kept the overall leader's yellow jersey. Gilbert of Belgium made up a huge amount of time before crossing 12 seconds adrift, with Australian cyclist Cadel Evans finishing third 15 seconds behind Costa.

American hopes of reaching the podium at race's end are pretty well gone with Tom Danielson, a 34-year-old from Colorado riding in his first Tour, in 25th place, almost 2 minutes behind the leader. The 10-man U.S. contingent, the most American riders in 25 years, was cut to nine when RadioShack rider Chris Horner dropped out after a crash Friday. Main U.S. hopeful Levi Leipheimer went down in the same crash and lost over three minutes on the stage.
