NBAWarriors hire Welts as president

Rick Welts, the longtime NBA executive, put his professional life on hold to take care of the personal side. Openly gay in the sports world, he is in the process of relocating from Phoenix to Northern California to be with his partner, Todd Gage. Welts' work plans changed in a hurry when the Golden State Warriors came calling. Less than three weeks after leaving his job as a top businessman with the Suns, Welts signed a multiyear deal to become the Warriors' president and chief operating officer.

Pride's Evans makes Pan Am team

Hofstra junior forward Shante Evans has been named to the USA women's basketball team for the Pan American Games Oct. 21-25 in Guadalajara, Mexico, the school and USA basketball announced. Evans becomes the university's first women's basketball player selected for international competition.

"It will be like playing at the next level, basically," the 6-foot Evans said. "I get to play with some of the best players in the country." Evans, who led the Pride in scoring (18.4) and rebounding (11.0) last season, was a first-team all-CAA selection and made The Associated Press All-America team.

WNBA

Angel McCoughtry scored 26 points, Iziane Castro Marques added 23 and the Atlanta Dream defeated the Indiana Fever, 83-67, in Indianapolis to win the Eastern Conference series, 2-1, and advance to the WNBA finals for the second straight year. Atlanta will play at Minnesota on Sunday in Game 1 of the best-of-five series.-- AP
