AUTO RACING
Tony Stewart outdueled points leader Jimmie Johnson on a late restart and pulled away for his first career Sprint Cup win at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., Sunday. Stewart started 22nd but was strong from the start of the lead-swapping 400-mile race. He vaulted five spots in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Johnson pushed his points cushion to 36 over Denny Hamlin with six races left.
GOLFO'Meara gets first Champions Tour win
Mark O'Meara knocked in a 4-foot par putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Michael Allen and win the Senior Players Championship, his first individual victory on the Champions Tour. O'Meara had a three-shot advantage on the back nine at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Potomac, Md., but a bogey on No. 16 shrunk his lead, and Allen charged into contention with birdies on three of the last five holes.
Slocum wins new event
Heath Slocum won the new McGladrey Classic at St. Simons Island, Ga., knocking in a 60-foot birdie putt from behind the 16th green just as his challengers were fading away. Slocum closed with a 2-under 68 at Sea Island Golf Club, winning by a shot over Bill Haas. Former LIer Arjun Atwal finished tied for third.
Australia's Katherine Hull rallied to win the Navistar LPGA Classic in Prattville, Ala., pulling ahead with a birdie on the par-5 17th and finishing with a 67 for a one-stroke victory over Brittany Lincicome.
COLLEGE FOOTBALLOhio State moves to No. 1
Ohio State has moved to the top of the college football rankings after No. 1 Alabama was beaten by South Carolina on Saturday. Oregon is No. 2 followed by Boise State and TCU. Alabama fell to No. 8.

Serena says season likely is over
Serena Williams says on her website she is "likely out for the year" because her injured right foot, which she said she cut on broken glass in Germany in July, hasn't healed properly. Williams says she "re-strained" her foot by overtraining . . . Rafael Nadal overpowered Gael Monfils, 6-1, 7-5, to win the Japan Open in Tokyo. - AP
