Warriors hire West

One of the most respected executives in the NBA is joining one of its most challenged franchises. The Golden State Warriors hired Jerry West on Friday to work with the front-office team in an advisory role and be a member of the executive board. West will assist the basketball operations staff and the business arm of the team, reporting directly to new owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber. The Warriors have made the playoffs only once since 1994.

UConn loses awards

The national champion Connecticut men's basketball program will lose two scholarships for the upcoming season as a result of a poor Academic Performance Rating from the NCAA. The national Academic Performance Rating is due out next week, but a link to an internal copy of the report ended up Friday on a UConn chat board. A university official with knowledge of the situation confirmed the report. -- AP

Stony Brook wins title

Nick Tropeano and Tyler Johnson earned wins as host Stony Brook swept a doubleheader against Albany to clinch the America East regular-season title. Chad Marshall homered in a 6-1 Game 1 win, and Maxx Tissenbaum went deep in Game 2, a 6-1 victory for the Seawolves (39-10, 20-2).
