Mike Davis, who was responsible for more creative and less severe U.S. Open golf course layouts when he took over as lead setup person following the 2004 scorched greens episode at Shinnecock Hills, was named seventh executive director of the U.S. Golf Association. Davis, 46, replaces David Fay, who retired in December after a 21-year run highlighted by taking the Open to a municipal course, Bethpage Black. NBABibby signs with Heat

Mike Bibby signed with the Miami Heat, the deal completed quickly after the 13-year point guard cleared waivers and became a free agent. Bibby is expected to be with the Heat when it hosts Orlando Thursday. Bibby was traded by Atlanta to Washington last week. He agreed to give up $6 million that was guaranteed to him next season to get out of his deal with Washington . . . The Boston Celtics signed free-agent forward Troy Murphy.

Evans has 36 for Pride

Shante Evans scored a career-high 36 points and added 14 rebounds to lead visiting Hofstra to a 91-84 victory over William & Mary. The 36 points is tied for the fourth-most in a single game in school history. Davis will continue in the part of his old job that he loved the most -- setting up golf courses for the Open. He set up the Black for the 2009 Open. The 46-year-old Davis was the USGA's senior director of rules and competition since 2005.

SOCCEROwl kicker fined, banned

Soccer player Luis Moreno, who kicked an injured mascot owl which subsequently died during a match, has been suspended for two matches and fined $560 by Colombian soccer officials. Murphy began the season with the New Jersey Nets but was traded to the Warriors last week. Murphy began the Golden State bought him out the matches. -- AP
