Teams and individuals ready to help after Sandy
The Madison Square Garden company will donate $500,000 to the relief effort and has scheduled a telethon on MSG Network during Friday's Knicks-Mavericks game to raise additional funds.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said in a Twitter note that he will donate "$1mm dollars" to the relief effort.
The Yankees said they will donate $500,000 to the American Red Cross.
The New York Road Runners, organizing body of the New York City Marathon, which was canceled Friday, said it will donate about $1 million and asked each of its participants in the 26.2-mile race to match the donation of $26.20.
Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association have pledged $1 million to the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and Feeding America.
The NFL and its players' union announced a $1-million gift.
The Minnesota Vikings and owner Zygi Wilf's family pledged $100,000.
Green Bay Packers defensive back Charles Woodson donated $100,000 to the Red Cross.
The NBA and its players' union have pledged $1 million.
Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat pledged the equivalent of his paycheck from Friday's game against the Knicks (an estimated $210,000 before taxes). The Heat planned to make an undisclosed donation.
The Los Angeles Lakers said they are giving $50,000 and will match donations of up to another $50,000 from fans.
The Orlando Magic donated $25,000.
Lowe's is pledging $1 million and also will match Jimmie Johnson's earnings in today's Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway with a minimum donation of $250,000 to the Red Cross. Johnson and his Hendricks Motorsports team are donating an additional $48,000.
NASCAR says its fans can make donations to charitable organization NASCAR Unites (go to nascar.com for additional information).
Former players, current coaches and broadcasters for the NHL's Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues will play a benefit game Saturday in Franklin, Tenn.
