St. John's wins first Big East hoops title
Chris Mullin led St. John's to its first Big East championship, scoring 23 points in an 85-77 win over favored Boston College before 19,591 at Madison Square Garden. The Redmen shot 68 percent from the field, which help offset 17 turnovers and Eagles center John Garris scoring 32 points. It was St. John's first victory in three tries against Boston College that season. Mullin was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. St. John's would reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen but lost, 70-67, to Georgia and finished the campaign 28-5.
