Yankees trade Elston Howard

The Yankees traded catcher Elston Howard to the Red Sox for pitchers Pete Magrini and Ron Klimkowski. Howard, 38, was hitting .196 with three homers through 66 games. In the Yankees' home opener that season against the Red Sox, Howard singled to rightfield with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to break up a no-hit bid by Billy Rohr, making his major-league debut. After the trade, they became teammates. Howard hit .147 in 42 games for the Red Sox in 1967, but his leadership and experience helped Boston reach the World Series. Howard, who in 1955 became the first African-American to play for the Yankees, earned the American League MVP award in 1963 after batting .287 with 28 homers and 85 RBIs. He retired after the 1968 season.
