Reggie Jackson gets yanked
In the sixth inning of the Yankees' 10-4 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park, Billy Martin pulled Reggie Jackson from the game after the rightfielder, slow to retrieve the ball, allowed Jim Rice to reach second on what the manager believed should have been a single. Rice's double put runners at second and third with one out. Martin accused Jackson of loafing and replaced him with Paul Blair with the Yankees trailing 7-4 at the time. In the dugout, Martin and Jackson yelled at each other and had to be separated by coaches Yogi Berra and Elston Howard.
