Tennis great Ashe dies in New York
Arthur Ashe, the first African-American man to win a Grand Slam event, died in New York Hospital from complications of AIDS at 49. He had contracted HIV from a blood transfusion during a heart operation in 1983. Ashe, the only African-American to win the men's singles titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and Australian Open, had become as well-known for his championing of civil rights as his play. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Bill Clinton in '93, and the main stadium at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows was named Arthur Ashe Stadium in his honor.
