Giacomin gets assist record
Rangers' Eddie Giacomin became the first goalie to record two assists in a game in a 5-3 win over the Maple Leafs before 17,250 at Madison Square Garden. Giacomin, known for his willingness to leave the crease, got the first assist in the second period on Bill Fairbairn's goal, which gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead. At 10:31 in the third period, he set up Pete Stemkowski's goal to get the record. Giacomin, 32, had notched an assist earlier that season and one of his two in the 1969-70 season was against the Maple Leafs. Giacomin, a Hall of Famer, finished with nine assists in 13 seasons.
