Rhodes goes deep three times

Dusty Rhodes crushed three home runs, becoming the last New York Giant to accomplish the feat, as his team routed the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-0, at the Polo Grounds. Rhodes, who wasn't typically a power hitter, went deep in the second, sixth and seventh innings, and clobbered one each off Tom Poholsky, Al Brazle and Royce Lint. Batting cleanup, he went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and John Antonelli pitched a 10-hit shutout. Rhodes' second homer followed Willie Mays' 36th of the season, which had put the star ahead of Babe Ruth's pace in 1927 when he hit 60. Mays finished the season with 41 homers and Rhodes with a career-high 15. The Giants swept Cleveland and won the 1954 World Series. Rhodes hit two homers in six World Series' at-bats against the Indians.
