Michael Cunningham: In era of wide-open offense, great defense puts Georgia on top

FBC-CUNNINGHAM-COLUMN-SPORTSPLUS:AT — It wasn’t long ago that Georgia was behind the times in big-time college football.

The Bulldogs were trying to win national championships with great defense and a conservative approach on offense. Meanwhile, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and LSU were ringing up points on the way to the College Football Playoff. They had wide-open offenses with top NFL prospects at quarterback and the skill positions.

Dan Wiederer: As the Chicago Bears’ latest skid drags on, players must find motivation within to maintain their focus

FBN-WIEDERER-COLUMN:TB — Last week, a day after the Chicago Bears lost their fourth consecutive game and fell to the bottom of the NFC, defensive lineman Justin Jones was asked how he and his teammates were handling the flood of losses, how players were digging deep to find the investment needed to persevere through this wayward season.

As a team captain, Jones knows his approach matters and his words must resonate. He spoke from the heart.

John Romano: If Bucs coaches have no faith in their offense, why should you?

FBN-ROMANO-COLUMN:PT — TAMPA, Fla. — When it comes to plotting offensive strategy and formulating a game plan, there is a fine line between recognizing your weaknesses and running scared.

And the Bucs, you might have noticed, were last seen cowering in Cleveland.

After a third straight quiet outing, Broncos depleted pass-rush faces 'great challenge' in Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson

FBN-BRONCOS-RAVENS-PREVIEW:DP — The day he traded outside linebacker Bradley Chubb to Miami, Broncos general manager George Paton expressed confidence in the rest of his edge group.

“We believe in the depth we have at outside linebacker, our young pass rushers,” Paton said as Denver went into its bye week at 3-5, insisting he would have made the trade regardless of his team’s record. “We’ve invested a lot in that position.”

Mark Bradley: The right man for a tough job – Brent Key, Georgia Tech head coach

FBC-BRADLEY-COLUMN:AT — This feels like the right hire. It mightn’t feel that way five years from now, but we’re not living in 2027. We’re living at a time when Georgia Tech is trying to correct the biggest wrong in Institute annals. Brent Key feels like the right place to start.

He’s an alum. That’s major. He wants the job, which is, too. Geoff Collins drove the Yellow Jackets so far into the ditch that extricating them figured to take years if not decades. As interim coach, Key gave a mighty tug. He won four games in eight tries. Collins won 10 in 38. Collins is home counting his Waffle House coffee cups. Key gets to try and fix what the master marketer broke, which was an entire program.

Michelle Kaufman: Political overtones made U.S. 1-0 World Cup win over Iran even more tense, meaningful

SOC-KAUFMAN-COLUMN:MI — It was 3 a.m. in Lyon, France, and hundreds of Iranians were still partying at the Place Bellecour, a park in the center of town.

“I-ran! I-ran!” they chanted, waving their green, red and white flags. Their team had just eliminated the favored United States from the 1998 World Cup with a 2-1 victory in one of the most politically charged games in tournament history. The tensions ran so high that security officers labeled the match “high risk.”

SOC-ENGEL-COLUMN:FT — FORT WORTH, Texas — The late Lamar Hunt may not have believed what has happened to a sport he loved more than football.

No American contributed more to the state of the beautiful game in this country than the late owner and founder of the Kansas City Chiefs football team.

'A dying art': Pennsylvania deer processors face marathon days as hunting season heats up

OTD-DEER-PROCESSORS:PG — When Doug Peffer opened his big-game butcher shop, deer hunters around the intersection of Beaver, Butler and Lawrence counties could pick from perhaps a dozen full-service processors to carve their harvest.

About 45 years later, Mr. Peffer’s outfit near Ellwood City stands among fewer than half that many across greater Pittsburgh, estimated his son, Johnathan Peffer, 39, taking a breather Sunday afternoon from a line of new deliveries stretching out the door.

Wildlife officials weigh new rules at Skyway Fishing Pier to curb bird entanglements

OTD-SKYWAY-WILDLIFE:PT — ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Florida wildlife officials are weighing new rules for anglers at Skyway Fishing Pier State Park after thousands of birds were entangled in fishing gear over the past two years.

Since January 2021, at least 3,300 seabirds required rescue from the pier after they were hooked or wrapped in fishing gear at the popular angling spot nestled next to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission data.

Fungus, not bird flu, likely cause of goose and duck die-off in southern Minnesota

OTD-GOOSE-DUCK-FUNGUS:MS — Bird flu did not cause a large waterfowl die-off last week on a southern Minnesota lake, the Department of Natural Resources determined after testing some of the dead birds.

More than 125 geese and ducks were found dead Nov. 20 on Loon Lake in Waseca. The preliminary diagnosis is that a fungal infection — most likely contracted by eating contaminated feed or corn — weakened the birds. That, combined with the recent cold spell and the stress of migration, caused deadly pneumonia, according to the DNR.

Lake Superior cisco population may be rebounding

OTD-CISCO-SUPERIOR:DU — DULUTH, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Lake Superior fisheries team got some good news when they were out trawling on the big lake in October: The number of small cisco — commonly called herring by folks along the North Shore — were way up.

"It was a very welcome sight for us. We haven't had even a decent year class since 2014-15," said Cory Goldsworthy, the DNR's Lake Superior fisheries manager. "And you have to go back to the 80s to have a really great year for them."
