SAN ANTONIO -- Tyson Chandler didn't only leave Dallas with his new championship ring that he wore proudly Wednesday night. He strained his left hamstring during a practice before the Knicks lost to the Mavericks and didn't play against the Spurs.

It was the first game Chandler has missed this season. He's day-to-day and hopes to play Friday night in Milwaukee.

"I'm hoping it feels better," Chandler said. "I'm just kind of listening to the doctors at this point. I'd rather be out there, but I'd rather not be out three to four weeks, either. I'm just trying to play it smart and listen to what they have to say."

Chandler has been playing with a badly injured left wrist, so this will give it a little time to heal, although he estimated the wrist would need six weeks.

With Chandler out, Mike D'Antoni started rookie Josh Harrellson in his place. Harrellson had eight points and eight rebounds.

D'Antoni might have turned to Jared Jeffries instead, but he suffered a sore right knee against Dallas. He sat last night and won't play in Milwaukee.

Lineup change

Rookie Iman Shumpert also started Wednesday night, replacing Landry Fields, who was 4-for-15 with nine points in the prior three games.

"Whatever," Fields said. "Just come off the bench and continue to try and do what I do -- just bring energy off the bench."

Shumpert had two points and shot 1-for-5 from the field. He had been the Knicks' starting point guard until Jeremy Lin emerged, and has been closing out games because of his defense. D'Antoni made the change hoping the Knicks would have better starts to the game and the second half.
