Commemorating 9/11 in the city

Museums and art galleries throughout the city are commemorating 9/11 with work by artists and photographers. Here are some highlights:
1. 9/11 PEACE STORY QUILT
WHAT Artist Faith Ringgold collaborated with New York City students ages 8-19 to create this three-panel quilt on the theme of peace. On Sunday there will be an artist talk at 2 p.m., a concert by the Wordless Music Orchestra at 3:30 p.m., and a poetry reading by NYU graduate students at 1 and 4:30 p.m.

2. REMEMBERING 9/11
WHAT Thousands of New Yorkers took photos of the World Trade Center attacks and what followed; this exhibit gathers several hundred pictures by amateurs and professionals, along with letters written to policemen and firemen and objects placed in makeshift shrines throughout the city. On Sunday at 11:30 a.m. there will be a free public reading of Maira Kalman's children's book "Fireboat."

3. AFTERMATH
WHAT Native New Yorker Joel Meyerowitz was the only photographer granted access to Ground Zero in the months after 9/11. His extraordinary "Aftermath" series documents the wreckage and the cleanup effort in meticulous detail. Meyerowitz will be present for a reception and a signing of the Phaidon press book "Aftermath" tomorrow from 3 to 5 p.m.

4. 9.11 BABELOGUE
WHAT Poet, performer and artist Patti Smith created 26 works on paper -- including a folded paper airplane inscribed with the names of passengers on flights 11 and 175 -- as a response to 9/11. They're being shown in New York in their entirety for the first time.

5. MEMORIAL IX XI
WHAT Twenty sculptures, paintings and installations by the artist and former Warhol acolyte Ultra Violet are on display to commemorate the anniversary.
