The constant clip-clop of horse and buggy. Undulating roads through miles of farmland. Amish-owned stores selling quilts, house-cured cheeses, and handmade furniture. This is the simplicity of a Lancaster Country, Pennsylvania, weekend, which is, honestly, romantic enough. But add a luxury hotel complex, and you’ve got a Valentine's Day escape like no other. "It's my opinion that people should start embracing the winter, as opposed to just enduring the winter," says Lisa Florczak, inventor of the ice bike and owner of Ice Bikes of Buffalo. She acknowledges her city has "a reputation of being a very snowy wintry place," but also a friendly and affordable place and home to The Ice at Canalside, a space along the Erie Canal that has a lot to offer those who like to play upon frozen water. "Ice skating? Check, we have that. Curling? Check, we have that. Ice bike? This is the birthplace of the ice bike," as she notes. 
If you’d like to try some of the winter pursuits that bank on how cold New York State can get, these are options to explore.

<h2>SNOWMOBILE RIDING</h2> 
<h3>C+C Adirondack Snowmobile Tours</h3> 
Snowmobile operation does require some training, but this Warren County company offers one- and two-hour tours for anyone, even the inexperienced. Guests will be fitted with a helmet and given a tutorial and practice time before all line up their vehicles for a trail ride along wooded paths. Guests will also get opportunities along the way to stop and take photos, and all trips are guided. One-hour tour: $95, two people on a vehicle: $120, passenger with guide: $55; two-hour tour: $169, two people on a vehicle: $214, passenger with guide: $95. Guests must be 17 to operate a snowmobile, 6 and older to ride with a parent. Participants are asked to dress for the weather. A way to slide down a snowy hill without much skill, tubing only requires the ability to get off the tube once it stops and then walk it back to the lift. Holiday Valley hosts a Tubing Park where guests pick a tube, get on a conveyor lift that takes tubers to the top of a hill where you then pick a lane carved from the snow. Once given the signal, all push off and slide down to the bottom. The facility’s larger hill is open to all ages 7 and older and there’s the "Li’l Tubers" smaller hill for younger participants. There’s an outdoor bonfire pit and a warming hut equipped with a snack bar ready for when it’s time to shake off the cold. $27 for a two-hour slide, $7 ages 6 and younger; helmets can be rented for $5, tickets must be purchased in advance online. Each 26-inch coaster bike (designed for people 50-inches in height and taller) has had its front wheel replaced with a steerable blade and the rear studded so it grips without damaging the ice. At The Ice at Canalside, riders use their bikes alongside skaters, so the free-standing, self-balancing cycles do not move too quickly and are very hard to upend. Florczak says that ice bikes have proved popular with seniors and the special needs community, as well as with people who've never learned to ice skate. The idea she says is that this is a way for non-skaters to glide along with those who can. With its lifts running daily, this ski resort in the Catskill Mountains offers more than a couple dozens trails that run over 9 miles of terrain, with a summit of 3,429 feet and a vertical drop of 1,404 feet. Downhill skiing and snowboarding is open to all ages, but for those in need of a tutorial there’s group lessons for ages 7 and older (or private lessons for those as young as 3). The cross-county skiing trails are currently closed, but will open as natural snow arrives (and are free to use), and once in operation are ideal for either hiking or snowshoeing. Guests looking for a bird's-eye view can also take a trip to the summit in the facility’s Catskill Thunder gondola. Located in Washington County, this experience (led by a licensed fishing guide) is available as half- or full-day expeditions, the fishing is done from within a shanty that’s kept at about 65 degrees. The hut also holds an underwater camera that shows where the fish are swimming nearby, and chairs to sit in while waiting to land a catch — which can be cooked on-site if desired. Tailgate lunches are included for full-day trips ($50 for half-day sessions) and an option of wild game tasting (such as venison or black bear) can be added. Pindar offers live music in the tasting room through March on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m. &quot;It’s usually one or two people playing a guitar. Something to listen to while you’re hanging out,&quot; says Rose Faiella, manager at the tasting room. She jokes that the vineyard isn’t encouraging Conga lines or karaoke, just relaxing with contemporary bar music while sipping wine. &quot;It’s another reason to come,&quot; she says. The rides are 10 minutes in duration and run daily at set times (2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays), but if you happen to be nearby between Feb. 18 through 26, the hours expand into the morning and late at night (8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily) before closing for the season on Feb. 27. A national historic landmark dating nearly 200 years, its nearly 480 acres of space is the final resting place for several celebrated historical figures. Visitors can join "Winter Wanders," 90-minute walking tours that take place around the grounds Sunday afternoons at 1 p.m. through March 13. 8 outdoor activities to try this winter in NYC

I could feel my world growing smaller when I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, a chronic illness that affects the digestive tract. In May 2020, we were in the midst of a global shutdown — and even before that, symptoms of my then-uncontrolled, unnamed illness had led me to stay home more often than not. 
One in four American adults live with a disability, and 60% have at least one chronic illness. As travel continues to ramp up, more people like me will have questions about how to navigate it with their circumstances. 
Through online communities, travelers with disabilities or chronic illnesses share tips and support for making the experience more accessible and alleviate fears that others might have when planning trips. 
I talked to some well-traveled experts on how to make travel more accessible and connect with local communities. 
Be your own travel agent 
In the podcast "What's Wrong With You?", New Zealand journalist Olivia Shivas and her friends discuss their experience navigating the world as wheelchair users. In their episode on disabilities and travel, the podcast team flies across New Zealand to interview a disability advocate and encounter accessibility barriers to travel firsthand. 
"One of the reasons we made the podcast is I love getting advice and helping other disabled people know what's possible," said Shivas, who was born with muscular dystrophy. 
Common issues that arise for wheelchair users while traveling include plane aisles being too narrow for their wheelchairs; hotels and attractions that don't meet accessibility needs; and wheelchairs being broken or lost by airlines. The latter is an expensive and life-altering occurrence for people traveling with wheelchairs — more than 15,000 wheelchairs have been damaged or lost by U.S. airlines since 2018 as of June 2021. While public spaces in the United States have to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act, Shivas says this is more limited in countries without similarly rigorous accessibility policies. 
Even the entrance to an Airbnb or hotel being a few inches off the ground can make it inaccessible for a wheelchair, Shivas said. 
"But just because the world is badly designed doesn't mean we don't want to see more of it," said Rebecca Dubber, Shivas's co-host and a Paralympian, on the podcast episode. 
To meet these challenges, Shivas thoroughly researches and plans each leg of her journey. She reads blogs and reviews by other disabled people, checks out the exterior of buildings on Google Maps (with a keen eye for staircases), and makes sure to request accessible accommodations. 
"​​I am basically my own travel agent," she said. 
Unfortunately, this doesn't always ensure a problem-free journey. On the podcast episode, the team discovered that the "accessible" lookout at a castle they visited was only reachable by steep staircases. 
"You kind of have to learn to be creative, adapt and find different solutions," she said. 
Reaching out to locals 
In 2014, Marlene Valle traveled to a new country without her family for the first time. Valle, who is deaf, received many warnings against traveling alone; they told her it was best to have a hearing person accompany her, she remembers. 
"I really thought it would be tough for me to travel because how would I navigate, communicate [with people who speak] verbally, how would I catch announcements on certain flights?" she said in American Sign Language. 
But travel quickly became her passion. After the first trip to South Korea in 2014, she started her blog "Deafinitely Wanderlust" and a YouTube account of the same name in 2015 to chronicle her journeys and the stories of people she met in the deaf community across the globe. Valle said she saw no representation of deaf people in the travel industry and wanted to change that. 
In 2018, Valle and her partner, who is also deaf, embarked on a yearlong journey across Asia. 
She considers the biggest hurdles to travel accessibility for deaf people to be a lack of awareness by airlines, tour groups and other travel organizations on how to make their services equitable. 
The best way Valle has found to make sure she doesn't miss flight updates or announcements is to download the airline's app and turn on alerts. She also makes sure to confirm the app's information with the departure boards at the airport and check in with gate agents so they will let her know when it's her turn to board. 
When planning trips, Valle often reaches out to local deaf community members, who can tell her what to expect in terms of accessibility. 
Prepare for the worst, but don't let it stop you 
Since Knowles-Griffiths was diagnosed with Crohn's disease at 13, she said, it has been "a defining part" of her identity. 
"I just had a lifelong passion for travel and tried to never let Crohn's stop me," she said. 
But about a decade ago, she experienced a severe flare-up of symptoms that made her question whether she would be able to travel again. She struggled to find any online resources specific to traveling with Crohn's. 
One of the biggest accessibility hurdles she has encountered overseas is bathroom access. 
Nearly having her medication confiscated by airport security taught Knowles-Griffiths to always carry a note from her doctor detailing her diagnosis and medical needs. 
Knowles-Griffiths said half of what she packs is often food and medication since her "safe" foods can sometimes be hard to find. 
 She sees every person traveling with a disability as already far outside their comfort zone. 
"The only way you can really fulfill your travel desires is by putting it front and forward, and knowing you're going to have to tackle it the whole way, but it's going to be so worth it," Knowles-Griffiths said.

As countries around the world react to the new and little-understood omicron variant of the coronavirus, travelers are once again facing unexpected border closures, evolving entry rules and a dark cloud of potential cancellations. 
Here are key questions and answers for travelers in light of the latest developments. 
<h3>Should I cancel my trip abroad?</h3> 
The World Health Organization warned that some groups of people should postpone travel to areas with community spread of the virus. That includes people who are unvaccinated or who have not previously been infected, those 60 or older, or anyone with preexisting medical conditions that put them at greater risk of severe illness. 
<h3>Are there any new restrictions on domestic travel?</h3> 
 Currently, domestic travel was carrying on as normal — or at least COVID-era normal. That means masks are required in airports and on planes, trains, and other forms of public transportation. Some locations may emphasize mask-wearing; New York City, for example, is strongly recommending that people wear masks indoors in public places. 
What do I have to do if I'm returning to the U.S. from a foreign country? 
Anyone flying into the country is required to test negative within three days of their flight. Under the anticipated new rules, all travelers flying into the United States would have to take a test one day before boarding. Officials are also considering whether they will require all passengers to get tested again within three to five days of arriving. They are discussing the possibility of a seven-day self-quarantine measure. 
Starting Dec. 5, the United States restricted travel from South Africa and seven other countries. Other regions and countries, including the European Union, Britain, Japan and Israel, also set restrictions for air travelers arriving from southern Africa. The restrictions will apply to travelers from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi. 
<h3>What do I have to do if I'm leaving the country?</h3> 
Border rules vary according to destination — and travelers should be aware those rules could change fast. The United Kingdom, for example, recently announced that anyone coming to the country will need to self-isolate until they get a negative PCR result. They will have to take the test by the end of their second day in the country. Canada is also requiring air travelers to test upon arrival and quarantine until they have results, though anyone coming from the United States is exempt. 
<h3>Is anywhere completely off limits?</h3> 
A small number of countries have put broad travel bans in place. Currently, noncitizens are not allowed to visit Israel for two weeks. Morocco suspended incoming air travel for two weeks as of Dec. 6, the Associated Press reported. And Japan is keeping all nonresident foreigners out of the country for at least a month. 
<h3>How can I keep track of rule changes?</h3> 
Airlines are supposed to keep travelers updated on the rules they need to follow in their destinations. And the U.S. State Department urges travelers to check embassy websites and the department's website (travel.state.gov) for information such as entry and exit rules, testing availability and quarantine information.

Large U.S. airlines are carrying about $20 more debt per passenger than before the pandemic, according to the chief executive officer of Frontier Group Holdings Inc., who predicts the carriers will start addressing those obligations with higher fares. 
"How long can that last?" asked Barry Biffle, CEO of ultra-low-cost Frontier Airlines. "They either have to raise their leisure fares or you reduce capacity so you can raise prices." 
U.S. carriers amassed roughly $60 billion in new debt last year to contend with the collapse in business from the pandemic. Their interest expense is likely to reach $20.7 billion through 2025, according to the trade group Airlines for America. Frontier's debt rose about $1 billion, or $1 a passenger, by the same accounting, according to the company. 
U.S. airlines also face higher costs now and into next year from crew training, pricier jet fuel, and rising airport and aircraft-maintenance expenses. 
"Cost issues remain topical and continue to run hot with our view that pressures will be more elevated into 2022 than Street estimates suggest," MKM Partners analyst Conor Cunningham wrote in a Nov. 18 note to clients. 
Fares are expected to rise 3.3% next year and 3.4% in 2023, according to a business travel forecast released Nov. 17 by travel manager CWT and the Global Business Travel Association. 
Because airline capacity remains constrained compared with 2019, business and leisure travelers are competing for seats, the pair said. 
"This will continue to exert pressure on airfare prices in 2022, as they move in unison with demand. If demand increases faster than capacity returns, price increases could outpace these forecasted increases," they said. 
In 2020, large airlines like United Airlines and American Airlines pivoted their networks to attract more leisure travelers in the absence of business traffic. They also deployed international wide-body jets on several domestic routes as many countries' borders closed. 
Analysts have begun to wonder whether leisure-focused carriers like Frontier and Spirit Airlines will reap a benefit from the potential return of corporate road warriors next year as the majors retreat from some leisure flying. 
Biffle said the industry will respond quickly if corporate trips return en masse. 
If business travel comes back to at least 80% of the 2019 level, "then you can see the big guys chase business traffic," he said in a wide-ranging interview Thursday. "If it's not back, or something less than 80%, then they're going to have to raise their leisure prices even more." 
Frontier remains in expansion mode, with plans to triple its fleet to 272 Airbus SE jets by the end of 2029, including 91 A321neos the company ordered this month at the Dubai Air Show. 
The purchase was part of a wider 255-jet buying spree by private equity firm Indigo Partners, the company's largest shareholder. That order includes 18 of the A321XLR, a variant that Airbus launched two years ago with a longer range of 4,700 nautical miles. The distance -- as long as eight hours of flying time -- would allow Frontier to begin transcontinental U.S. service and to consider European destinations like Ireland and the U.K., along with new routes to South America, Biffle said. 
Frontier's XLR deliveries start in 2025, and Biffle said the carrier will decide on some routes in late 2023. 
"We're going to put the airplane where we can make the most money," he said.

Long Islanders should plan for a pre-pandemic style Thanksgiving rush, officials said, with busier roads and airports clogged like Saturday, when 2.2 million passed through checkpoints nationwide. 
Saturday marked the third consecutive day travelers screened by Transportation Safety Administration officers surpassed the 2 million mark, officials with the agency said. 
"The Thanksgiving travel period has begun! #MaskUp," TSA Northeast spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said Saturday on Twitter. 
Officials credit the boost in airline travel to increased COVID-19 vaccination rates and President Joe Biden’s decision earlier this month to reopen the nation’s borders to vaccinated foreign travelers after 18 months of restrictions. 
"It’s no surprise, people have been cooped up for 18 months," AAA Northeast spokesman Robert Sinclair said Sunday. "People are ready to travel." 
More than 53 million Americans are predicted to travel for Thanksgiving this year, a 13% bump over 2020. Air travel is expected to spike by 80% compared to last year, AAA said. Monday, Tuesday and especially Wednesday will be busy at Kennedy, LaGuardia and other area regional airports, Sinclair said. 
At Long Island MacArthur Airport, Dan Farnham of Montauk said so far so good as he waited for a flight to Orlando, Florida, where he will spend Thanksgiving. 
"I don't see any issues so far," Farnham said. "We are ahead of the rush at this point." 
Gasoline prices remain high in Suffolk and Nassau counties but Sinclair said that should not keep travelers off Long Island highways this week. The average price for a gallon of regular was $3.555 on Sunday, up from $3.549 last week and $2.137 a year ago. 
The Long Island Rail Road, meanwhile, announced that 12 extra trains will depart from Penn Station between 12:45 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, including four additional trains on the Babylon branch, three on the Port Jefferson/Huntington branch, and one each on the Far Rockaway, Montauk and Port Washington branches. Times are available on the LIRR TrainTime app and MTA.info trip planning tools. 
The LIRR will operate on a weekend/holiday schedule Thursday, with extra service scheduled for before and after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. There will be six extra westbound trains originating on Long Island between 6 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. [two each on the Babylon branch and Ronkonkoma branch, and one each on the Montauk and Port Jefferson branches]. Eleven extra eastbound trains will depart Penn Station between 11 a.m. and 1:35 p.m. [four each on the Babylon and Ronkonkoma branches, two on the Port Jefferson/Huntington branch and one on the Montauk branch]. 
The LIRR will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Friday. Lower, off-peak fares are in effect on LIRR trains at all times for the rest of 2021.

MUST TRY There’s a real, former fire vehicle to explore: Engine Number 5, which once served the City of Binghamton’s Fire Department. The exhibit also describes the history of Binghamton’s Fire Department, from its horse-drawn beginnings to today and provides some information on fire safety. Kids can explore a "grocery store" Weis Markets playspace, or get to know more about their health in "Dr. Demtrak's Healthy You" exhibition. MUST TRY Among the things to check out is the STEM Room, which offers the ability to experiment with motion, magnets and wind. The Congress Park exhibit is inspired by the city park a few blocks away and takes a look at types of fauna, flora and their habitats. There’s also a play grocery, a bank designed to teach financial literacy, a kid-sized post office and "Happy’s Diner," a retro-styled restaurant fun space. This museum is dedicated to the history of play. A collections-based facility, it has 100,000 square feet of exhibit space and things to play with here include video games, dolls, games and other toys. 
MUST TRY Check out the Toy Halls of Fame — based on historically iconic playthings, featuring a virtual play room where attendees can digitally operate famous toys and a virtual bubble wall where you can make and then pop imaginary bubbles. There’s also a "Wegmans Super Kids Market" where younger kids can play supermarket and "Imagination Destination," where children can pretend to have a variety of adult jobs. Through Jan, 2, there’s a "Very Eric Carle" exhibit based on the children’s author behind the "Very Hungry Caterpillar" book, and starting Nov. 26, the Strong will open its "Skyline Climb" adventure course that will allow kids of all ages to navigate a series of obstacles, floating bridges and even a zip line.

A nonprofit organization, this spot uses its exhibits to celebrate the North Country region of New York State and to provide an enlightening experience geared toward children 12 and younger that touches on science, engineering and the arts. 
MUST TRY Highlights to look out for include the "Adirondack Water Play" exhibit, which explores the area’s hydropower dams and river-based environment, including an interactive display focused on the Raquette River, where guests can direct currents and create rapids. Attendees can also create a digital "maple leaf" then watch as it goes through seasonal changes. Visit the Flight Lab where guests can explore the science of flight by building — and then testing — a flyer. The "Construction Zone" features a working crane and "The Playspace," a section aimed at crawlers, toddlers and preschool-age children, offers items meant to encourage sensory play and their imaginations. 6 children's museums to visit in New York State this winter

At Walt Disney World, the kids can't hug Mickey and Minnie these days. Instead, because of the ongoing pandemic, they wave to them on parade floats and balconies. One water park, Typhoon Lagoon, has yet to reopen, along with attractions such as Disney's Festival of Fantasy parade and a half-dozen shows. Even the way you wait in line-or skip it-will evolve this fall, as FastPass+ is being phased out in favor of a paid digital system called Disney Genie+ for expediting entry at popular rides. 
 Now that Disney World kicked off an 18-month celebration of its 50th anniversary on Oct. 1, VIP offerings are harder to procure than ever. If you're planning your visit with an eye to luxury, here are some workarounds to ensure you can still cut lines and greet princesses, without a hitch.

Your best chance at meeting a favorite character won't be in the park. It's at Ravello, the airy first-floor Italian restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando, right outside the Magic Kingdom's gates, but within the Walt Disney World Resort complex. For its prix fixe Good Morning Breakfasts every Thursday and Saturday, the spot is staffed by friendly servers bearing bagels with house-smoked salmon.

There are plenty of places to have a knockout meal at Walt Disney World: Takumi-Tei's omakase menu in Epcot's Japan Pavilion and gastronomic crown jewel Victoria &amp; Albert's at the Grand Floridian Resort &amp; Spa come to mind. But they and others have remained closed in the 14 months since the parks reopened. Thankfully, notable newcomers include Topolino's Terrace, which serves fresh seafood and pastas at the Riviera Resort, and Steakhouse 71, which mixes a traditionally indulgent menu with a family-friendly atmosphere at the Contemporary Resort. California Grill, sitting atop that iconic A-frame building, is also reinventing dishes from its first menu-such as duck à l'orange pizza-for a 50th anniversary throwback. 
Trying to avoid long waits? Get a line-cutting concierge. 
Private VIP tours that whisk guests directly onto rides with the help of a knowledgeable guide are a mainstay among well-heeled travelers. And for good reason: For about $4,500 these experts play fixer for the day, handling every detail from chauffeured transportation (along out-of-sight routes) between parks to securing viewing spots for fireworks shows such as Harmonious, a new multilingual spectacle at Epcot. 
No surprise, they're very much in demand amid Covid-19. Reservations must be made by phone (407 560-4033), starting 60 days before arrival; set a reminder to book as soon as slots open at 9 a.m. local time, or you may wind up with a gourd instead of a golden carriage.

There's one other back channel to getting in-park assistance. Although Disney hotels don't offer traditional concierges, guests in certain room types-club-level, suites, and select top-tier villas-are given complimentary access to Disney Signature Services, which guides you through all advanced bookings, dining reservations, and park plans. Given the operational changes on the way with the introduction of Disney Genie+, this will be more helpful than ever. Instead of planning the next day's schedule of rides, you can take a late-night soak in your hot tub, a perk in the fancy two-bedroom cabins at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, or kick back in a waterfront bungalow with Cinderella Castle views at the Polynesian Resort.

Communal buses, though not glamorous, have long been the most seamless form of Disney transportation. But the red-polka-dotted "Minnie Vans" that used to privately take families to the parks, hotels, and even the airport haven't yet returned. What's more, Disney's Magical Express complimentary airport shuttle is being phased out in early 2022. 
If you're driving yourself, opt for preferred parking, which shortcuts the long walk to the front gate. Costing $45 to $50 a day-about $20 more than standard parking-it will smooth out the hectic early-morning and late-evening rush. Ride-sharing apps such as Lyft and Uber are also an option; they have clear pickup points in convenient spots, with rides between hotels and parks usually topping out around $15. 
That said, eliminating the airport bus is likely to spur demand for these apps come January-making local black-car outfits such as Mears Luxe a valuable addition to your contact list (you can dial 407 422-2222 or download the app). Whichever option you choose, remember those comfy shoes: You're still going to clock your 10,000 daily steps. 
Not feeling like Cinderella? Get a makeover.

Disney's resorts don't contain any minibars, and because of ongoing pandemic protocols, the only one currently offering room service is the Grand Floridian Resort &amp; Spa, so plan ahead for any post-park hunger if you're staying on property. Long Island malls may be a shopper’s delight, but over in New Jersey, the American Dream retail and entertainment complex delivers an exciting experience for families that includes dining, amusement park rides and much more. Located at 1 American Dream Way in East Rutherford, New Jersey — about 60 miles from the center of Long Island — a drive that can take two to three hours depending on traffic, is a perfect day trip. Here are fun things to do, where to eat and shop while visiting the mega fun zone. 
<h2>THINGS TO DO</h2> 
Parking is $3 per vehicle, but the first hour is free. There are three floors to this mega-site that spans more than 3 million square feet (<a href="https://www.americandream.com/map">americandream.com</a>). There are several interactive kiosks found around the massive mall. Touch the screen and not only will you get directions to your destination, but also receive an estimated walking time.

Massive murals cover many of the walls within American Dream, but one wing of shopping options lies within this indoor boulevard that leads to high-end retail stores. Striking white sculptures that combine human faces with manicured green vegetation dot the area. There are fountains and pools, plush seating and art installations.

The stadium across the street is primarily active for NFL games, with the Jets or Giants currently playing through Jan. 9. It might be tempting to extend a trip to see some gridiron action while visiting American Dream — and that’s easy because a covered walking bridge over Rt. 120 connects the stadium parking lot and Deck A at American Dream. Big SNOW (<a href="http://bigsnowamericandream.com">bigsnowamericandream.com</a>) is currently closed and under repair, with an expected reopening in 2022 — but it’s something to look forward to, as it’s billed as the only indoor, real-snow, year-round ski and snow resort in North America. Visitors can sled, ski or snowboard while on this enclosed, temperature-controlled mountain. All-Inclusive packages and private lessons will also be available again once things are up and running.

It's been a big year for Mount Desert Island, a craggy hump of pink Maine granite that's home to Acadia National Park. Already one of the busiest parks in the United States, Acadia is on track for a record-breaking year. 
 Starting in the mid-1800s, the island became a destination for a generation of nature seekers called "rusticators," who traveled from East Coast cities by train, carriage and sail. 
What is rusticating? It's the 19th-century version of going country. Think: picnics by rowboat, plein-air painting or daylong hikes along mountain trails.

Nowadays, tourists gather in predawn darkness to watch the sunrise from the top of Cadillac Mountain. 
 On the "Quiet Side," the relaxed western half of Mount Desert Island, I found a coterie of visitors lined up, phones at an arm's length, to capture an ocean sunset from the rocky coast at Seawall. 
Preserving the spirit of the Gilded Age era is the Claremont Hotel, a genteel 1884 rambler in the Quiet Side town of Southwest Harbor. After years of gentle decline, the hotel was sold last fall to Kennebunkport, Maine, hotel magnate Tim Harrington. It reopened in May following careful renovations that restored it to laid-back elegance. 
 In the main hotel, which has 24 guest rooms, the colors are sweet and sunny as a garden bouquet.

Croquet isn't the only 19th-century pursuit thriving on Mount Desert Island. Back then, visitors — some in long skirts and petticoats — liked to scramble around on the island's nubbly boulders. They called it "rocking," and today, the oceanside cliffs within Acadia National Park are legendary among northeastern rock climbers. 
Waking early on the second day of our trip, we set out for a trek to some of the island's summits. A steep walk led to Bald Peak, then we continued through ripening wild blueberries to Parkman Mountain, Gilmore Peak and the 1,373-foot Sargent Mountain. After the final ascent, we passed a family splashing around in Sargent Mountain Pond, a lily-dotted pool believed to be the oldest lake in Maine. 
Only after an acrimonious battle were automobiles permitted, in 1913, into all Mount Desert Island towns. The car-free carriage roads in a way became a hedge against modernity: Both summer people and locals would always have a place to escape the clattering engines of a mechanizing world. 
 The Asticou Inn is another grand hotel from Mount Desert Island's Gilded Age. (Though the 1883 original burned down, the current version was rebuilt at the turn of the century.) 
It has faded charm, a breezy deck and, I knew, a great recipe for popovers. Ever since the trail-side restaurant Jordan Pond House began serving them in 1895, the puffy baked goods have been an island tradition. Seated on the back deck at the Asticou, which has views of yachts bobbing in Northeast Harbor, we ordered a pair with Maine blueberry jam on the side.

"Two pops coming up," the waitress replied, returning promptly with a basket of softball-size treats. My popover exhaled steam when I tore it open. It was delicious enough that I was tempted to order another round, but the deck was filling up with tourists. Someone was probably waiting for our table, and besides, we had been sitting long enough. 
"We're not here to relax," I reminded myself, brushing crumbs off my hiking clothes as we began the long walk back toward the car. "We're rusticating."

Free or discounted admission available for U.S. 4th-grade students, seniors, military with ID and Gold Star Families.
