The East End of Long Island comes alive in summer. The Hamptons are abuzz with shoppers, diners and beachgoers, some of them celebrities. Montauk is a cool magnet for hipsters and surfers. The North Fork beckons with vineyards and farm-to-table restaurants. Shelter Island is an oasis of calm. And the entire region is full of charming hotels, inns and B&Bs that make inviting base camps for your getaways. Book early (it's high season), then shift into full vacation mode.
