LI weather: Rain, strong winds, possible severe thunderstorms

An incoming cold front will bring heavy rain, strong winds and possible severe thunderstorms to kick off the week, according to the National Weather Service.

Long Islanders should expect a foggy Monday with a slight chance of showers in the morning, then showers and thunderstorms likely after 2 p.m. The high temperature will be about 72 degrees with a south wind between 5 to 10 mph. The chance of precipitation is 60% and new rainfall amounts will be between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except for higher amounts possible with thunderstorms, the weather service said.

“The probability for severe weather is a bit less as you go further east,” John Murray, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Sunday evening.

Thunderstorms are mainly forecast between 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday with potential wind gusts in excess of 58 mph that could damage trees and power lines and result in scattered power outages. One-inch hail, marginal flooding and an isolated tornado are also possible, according to the weather service.

At night, mostly cloudy skies and showers are likely before midnight, then a chance of showers between midnight and 2 a.m. are in the forecast heading into Tuesday. New precipitation amounts are estimated to be between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible with thunderstorms.

The forecast dries out for a sunny Tuesday with temperatures in the low 70s and west wind between 10 and 16 mph. Tuesday night will be mostly clear with a low around 52 with northwest wind between 8 to 13 mph.

Wednesday will start sunny with a high near 70, but at night chances of rain will be about 30% after 2 a.m. with cloudy skies and a low around 52.

Average temperatures for this time of the year are in the upper 60s, Murray said.

A 30% chance of showers is forecast for Thursday before 8 a.m. Partly sunny skies with a high near 68 are also in the forecast. Nighttime will be mostly cloudy with a low around 54, according to the weather service.

Temperatures are expected to hit the mid 70s on Friday with partly sunny skies. Friday night will cool down to about 60 degrees.

Saturday is forecast to be the hottest day of the week at about 82 with mostly sunny skies. Temperature drops to a low in the 60s at night with mostly cloudy skies.

Sunday will be partly sunny with a high near 78 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
