Long Island's top software company fell off the Fortune 500, leaving two companies to represent the region on the annual list of America's top companies.

After making a comeback to appear on last year's list, Islandia-based CA Technologies posted a 3.9 percent decline in 2013 revenue to $4.6 billion and fell from 499th to 529th place.

The top Long Island company on the list based on revenue was Henry Schein Inc., a global distributor of health care products. The Melville company saw revenue rise 6.9 percent to $9.6 billion and climbed four slots on the Fortune ranking to No. 292.

Also appearing on the list was Cablevision Systems Corp., the Bethpage-based telecommunications company that owns Newsday. Cablevision had revenue of $6.5 billion and placed 397th, down from 382 the prior year.

To create the list, Fortune ranks U.S.-incorporated companies based on revenue for their fiscal years. Adjustments are not made for mergers, acquisitions or discontinued operations. The list includes public and private companies that file documents with a government agency, including those owned by a private company such as a private equity firm.

Cablevision, which sold its Optimum West and the bulk of its Clearview Cinemas units in 2013, declined to comment on the ranking. CA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Henry Schein became a public company in 1995 and debuted on the Fortune list in 2004 at No. 497.

"Our continued climb up the Fortune 500 rankings for a decade underscores the soundness of our long-term strategic vision for the company," Henry Schein chief executive Stanley Bergman said.

Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc. retained its hold on the Fortune 500's top spot with revenue of $476.3 billion. The rest of the top 10 was, in order: Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Berkshire Hathaway, Apple, Phillips 66, General Motors, Ford, General Electric and Valero Energy.

The top-ranked New York State company was telecommunications provider Verizon Communications in 16th place.

Long Island companies following CA on Fortune's list were Port Washington computer retailer Systemax at number 677 and Ronkonkoma vitamin and nutritional supplement maker NBTY at 708. NBTY was purchased for $3.8 billion by private equity firm Carlyle Group in 2010.

Arrow Electronics, once Long Island's largest public company, ranked 138th on the Fortune list with revenue of $21.4 billion. The electronics wholesaler moved from Melville to Englewood, Colorado, in 2011.
