With the level of U.S. troops in Iraq expected to diminish all through next year, some area employers are starting to discuss veterans' homecoming – and job needs.

The diversity and inclusion council of the Society for Human Resource Management, Long Island Chapter is laying groundwork at tomorrow’s annual conference for its veterans employment initiative.

The goal, says Christel Colon, council director, is to start heightening awareness among hiring managers as to:

--Complying with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act;
--Transferable skills, as outlined in a leaflet “10 Reasons to Hire Vets;”
--Resources to help employers and veterans alike.

Says Colon, “How good can it be if someone who served his or her country gets a job?”

So, let’s just hope that the hiring picture continues to improve for everyone as the months progress.
