Consumer prices edge up in metropolitan area

Consumer prices in the metropolitan area edged up last month from a year earlier on higher costs for electricity and housing.
The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday that its consumer price index for the 31-county region that includes Long Island rose 1.3 percent in March compared with a year ago.
Electric bills soared 13.2 percent, year over year, while the cost of natural gas and gasoline fell 4.2 percent and 4.4 percent, respectively.
Grocery prices rose nine tenths of one percent from March 2013.
The cost of health care was up 2.2 percent last month from a year earlier. Residential rents increased 2.4 percent while clothing prices were off seven tenths of one percent.
