Google, Amazon, Apple: Timeline of tech developments in New York City

Within weeks of each other, two tech behemoths announced plans to vastly grow their operations in New York City. In November, Amazon announced it would open a hub in Long Island City, Queens, creating 25,000 jobs. And on Monday, Google said it would develop a 1.7-million-square-foot campus in lower Manhattan. 

Apple also said it would add hundreds of employees in its New York office as part of a hiring push announced last week, when it revealed plans to open a new facility in Austin, Texas. 

Here’s a look at how the tech companies have expanded their reach throughout the city in recent years. 

2000: Google opened its first New York office. The single-person sales office was the company’s first location outside of California, CNN reported.

2006: Google leased a large building covering a full city block at 111 Eighth Ave. that has been its primary office in the city. 

2010: Google bought the 111 Eighth Ave. building for more than $1.8 billion.

2011: Apple leased office space at 100-104 Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron District for its advertising division.

2014: Amazon leased 470,000 square feet in midtown Manhattan at 7 West 34th St., across from the Empire State Building.

2017: In September, Amazon leased 360,000 square feet of office space to house its advertising division. The company committed $55 million to build its new office space at 450 West 33rd St.

Later that month, the company also announced it would open its first New York fulfillment center on the West Shore of Staten Island.  

2018: February: Google spent $2.4 billion to buy a Chelsea Market building where it already has offices and said that it would lease more space from Pier 57, a commercial building on the Hudson River. 

November: Amazon announced it would open its new hub in Long Island City, Queens, promising to bring 25,000 jobs to the region. The company said it would invest $2.5 billion and in return will receive $2.8 billion in state and city aid. 

Dec. 13: Apple announced plans to add hundreds of jobs to the more than 1,000 it already has in New York City as part of a broader expansion that would include a new $1 billion campus in Austin.

Dec. 17: Google announced plans to develop a 1.7 million-square-foot Hudson Square Campus. The company said in a blog post it would lease buildings at 315 and 345 Hudson St. and at 550 Washington St. in lower Manhattan.
