African Well Fund Announces 16th Annual Build A Well For Bono’s Birthday

AWF teams up with The Humanity Project to provide clean water for maternity clinic in Mloka, Tanzania.

The African Well Fund (AWF) is excited to announce its 16th annual Build A Well For Bono’s Birthday campaign. Beginning May 1st, AWF invites U2 fans from around the world to donate funds in honor of the musician’s 58th birthday. This year, AWF is proud to announce a new partnership with The Humanity Project, an organization working in Mloka, Tanzania.

Founded by Michael Herman and Rachael Yoder, The Humanity Project has completed the construction of a maternity clinic and is raising funds to provide a clean water source for the clinic. In Tanzania, only 44% of healthcare facilities that deliver babies have access to water, decent toilets, and handwashing with soap. Of these, only 24% have a delivery room. The situation is similar across Sub-Saharan Africa, with 42% of healthcare centers having no water source within 500 meters.

“We are thrilled to partner with AWF on the Mloka well,” said Ms. Yoder. “The Humanity Project has made great strides in the development of a health center in this village, which will serve not just the village of Mloka but also the surrounding 5 villages who currently lack access to medical care. We are incredibly grateful to the AWF leadership team and donors for their support!”

From May 1st to May 31st, fans may donate through the AWF website https://africanwellfund.org/build-a-well-for-bonos-birthday-2018/. As always, all donors are invited to add their name and a message to a birthday card that the organization will send to Bono upon completion of the fundraiser.

Every year, AWF joins together with the U2 fan community to celebrate and honor Bono’s birthday by raising funds for clean water and sanitation projects. This year’s theme is “Love Is All We Have Left.” AWF Chairperson, Rob Trigalet says, “The Humanity Project is a great team of people who have recently built a maternity clinic in Mloka and with the money donated to this year’s fundraiser, we will be working together to add a water source closer to the medical clinic.”

Since 2003, U2 fans from across the globe have raised over $260,000 in Bono's honor to fund the construction of clean water and sanitation projects that are benefiting more than 80,000 people in Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

The African Well Fund is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission of funding clean water and sanitation projects in sub-Saharan Africa. Since its founding in 2002, the organization has raised more than $1 million to fund over 30 projects in 15 countries, benefiting more than 350,000 people.
