GCF’s College Campus Donation Drive Helps Keep Over 66,000 pounds of Household Items Out of Landfills

In Its 17th Year, the Give and Go Program Has Provided 180,000 Pounds of Goods to Help Local Families

Goodwill Community Foundation®(GCF) has collected over 66,000 pounds of clothing and household goods as part of its Give and Go program. The program, facilitated at college campuses in Eastern North Carolina, offers a way for college students to donate unneeded dorm room items as they began moving out in April.

Beginning with just one school in 2010, the Give and Go program has grown to 12 colleges and universities. The mission remains the same – recycle and reuse by diverting dorm room leftovers from the landfill and create a sustainable donation stream. The experience was customized to the needs of each campus, with trailers being utilized as donation sites in some instances, and collection boxes deployed in smaller venues. Participating schools included Barton College, Duke University, East Carolina University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Methodist University, University of Mount Olive, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Saint Augustine’s University Shaw University and North Carolina Wesleyan College.

“Give and Go is successful because of the college and university community supporting GCF and we are grateful for the students who make it possible,” said GCF President Rev. Dennis McLain. “This program instills social responsibility to college students, redirects items from the landfill, brings in donations to GCF and allows us to continue our vision of creating opportunities for a better life.”

The revenue generated from the donations will be used for grants that support employment and benefits for over 370 people, fund free online education for millions of people in English, Spanish and Portuguese, provide food from the GCF Farm to food banks, create 20,000 school kits to marginalized communities in eastern North Carolina, support to NICU families, provide free accounting services to youth-oriented organizations and fund grants with a focus on young people throughout eastern North Carolina as well as internationally.
