Preschool is an exciting time for both the parents and the children. However, how does one go about finding the best school for their child?
“It is important to find one that uses play-based, child-directed philosophy with a focus on emotional intelligence,” said Eileen Manoukian, founder and director of Gem Educare, the first daycare/preschool to implement the Awareness Integration Model, which is a new model focused on children’s emotional intelligence and well-being. “By using the very effective techniques developed by Awareness Integration Model, we teach children how to distinguish between their emotions, thoughts and behaviors and realize the impact of their behavior on themselves and others. We teach them how to alter the behavior to get a desirable impact. We also hold parents’ meetings where we train them on how to continue using these methods at home.”
To further educate parents on what to look for in a preschool, Manoukian, a doctoral candidate in the field of Early Childhood Education, lists the following three tips:
No. 1: Look for schools that address any behavioral issues in an appropriate way. This includes talking to children and creating a safe space for them to express their thoughts and feelings. “It is imperative to calm children down and use techniques to help them release the negative feeling, which changes their mood and behavior,” stressed Manoukian.
No. 2: Look for schools that offer a holistic education approach. Any school should care about children’s mental, physical and emotional health. Part of their physical health is directly related to their nutrition. “In order to provide the best nutrition, the school should offer organically grown vegetables and fruits,” added Manoukian. “By doing this the children learn to eat all the nutritious food on a daily basis and enjoy it.”
No. 3: Look for schools that employ highly educated caregivers in the field of child development and child psychology. Caregivers should not only have the experience of working with children, but be equipped with the science of how to care for a child, educate one in the best way possible and help children develop cognitively, physically and emotionally. “Caregivers who posses this knowledge and science can help children with their developmental needs, help them realize their strengths and challenges and help them be the best version of themselves,” concluded Manoukian. “Members of the staff should also be CPR certified and be trained to help children overcome separation anxiety.”
