One hundred teen entrepreneurs will participate in Shark Tank-like business plan competition and vie for prizes and a chance to compete in NYC

SAN FRANCISCO (PRWEB) April 30, 2018

NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship) is proud to partner with the City of San Jose to present the City of San Jose Youth Entrepreneurship & Innovation Summit. This day-long event will bring together local business leaders and Bay Area high schoolers participating in the NFTE’s programs across Santa Clara County. The event is supported by the Citi Foundation, Diana Davis Spencer Foundation, PayPal, EY, Bank of the West and the City of San Jose's Business Owner Space and Work2Future. The Summit expects to draw over 150 attendees and will take place at the San Jose City Hall on Friday, May 4, 2018.

“I’d like to thank NFTE for their commitment to helping San Jose youth develop critical career skills that will help them participate in and benefit from the Silicon Valley innovation economy,” said Mayor Sam Liccardo. “I look forward to welcoming 100 young entrepreneurs to this day-long summit.”

NFTE is a global nonprofit that activates the entrepreneurial mindset in youth in underserved communities. One hundred current NFTE Bay Area students from six San Jose high schools including, San Jose’s East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD), Summit Public Schools and Diamond Technology Institute, who have won classroom competitions will participate in this Semi-Final business plan competition event. The winners will feed into NFTE's Regional Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge and the National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge that takes place in NYC in the fall.

Students who make it to the final round of judging will compete in San Jose's City Council chambers and will be welcomed by Mayor Sam Liccardo and ESUHSD Superintendent Chris Funk. Students who have participated in earlier rounds of judging will have an opportunity to participate in enlightening afternoon workshops hosted by EY, PayPal, Bank of the West and the USPTO.

“It's a great privilege to showcase these exceptional students as part of the City of San Jose Youth Entrepreneurship & Innovation Summit because they've all developed the entrepreneurial mindset,” said Alfredo Mathew, Director of Programs for NFTE Bay Area. “They really are the future of global innovation, financial inclusion and prosperity and we’re delighted to partner with the City of San Jose to share their talents and businesses.”

In addition, over 60 volunteers from the business community will have the unique opportunity to serve as coaches to the young entrepreneurs, helping to develop the students’ entrepreneurial mindset and offering advice on how to improve their business plans and presentation skills. Volunteers will be paired with students, using their own achievements in business to encourage perseverance, innovation and self-reliance. The event also serves as a networking opportunity for those organizations and individuals interested in building the San Jose and Silicon Valley entrepreneurial talent pipeline.

“Our long-standing relationship with NFTE allows meaningful ways for our people to work with underserved young people and help them unlock the value of an entrepreneurial mindset,” said Ibi Krukrubo, EY San Jose Managing Partner, who will also be a judge at the Summit. "At EY, we’re deeply committed to developing future generations of talent and growing the social impact of entrepreneurs in San Jose and across the globe and we look forward to seeing these young entrepreneurs thrive and succeed.”
