The OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District urges employers to reinforce fall prevention awareness with employees.

DUBLIN, Calif. (PRWEB) April 24, 2018

The OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, the only OSHA authorized OTI Education Center headquartered in Northern California, is announcing OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction the week of May 7-11, 2018. The goal of this annual safety event, now in its fifth year, is to raise fall hazard awareness across the country in an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries.

“Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction employees,” says Cari Elofson, Assistant Director of the OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District. “Bureau of Labor Statistics data indicate that 370 of the 991 construction fatalities recorded in 2016 were attributable to falls. We urge construction employers to participate in the Safety Stand-Down to raise fall hazard awareness with their workers and help eliminate these preventable deaths.”

A Safety Stand-Down is a voluntary opportunity for employers to talk directly to workers about job hazards, protective methods and the company's safety policies and goals. Any workplace can hold a Safety Stand-Down by taking a break to focus on fall hazards and reinforce the importance of fall prevention. The event can also be an opportunity for employees to talk about fall and other job hazards with their employers. Managers are encouraged to plan a work day activity during the week of May 7-11, 2018, such as offering a toolbox talk, conducting safety equipment inspections, developing rescue plans or discussing job specific hazards.

The National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction has been a tremendous success over the last four years. Thousands of employer fall prevention activities as well as over 150 public events have been reported across the country each year. Participants have included commercial construction companies of all sizes, residential construction contractors, sub- and independent contractors, highway construction companies, general industry employers, the U.S. military, other government participants, unions, employer's trade associations, institutes, employee interest organizations and safety equipment manufacturers.

OSHA has created a National Safety Stand-Down webpage that offers an overview of the event, suggestions for how to conduct a successful activity, numerous resources (training materials, fall safety videos, etc.) and an opportunity to share your company’s story and receive a Certificate of Participation.

The OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is offering OSHA 3115-Fall Protection, a 3-day course that provides an overview of state-of-the-art fall protection technology and current OSHA requirements, at multiple locations, including:
