The Children’s Center is a Leader in Providing Mental Health Support and Treatment to Children and Families; Clinicians Available to Discuss Tools and Support

Detroit, MI (PRWEB) May 12, 2016

As a leading provider of mental health and wellness services to thousands of children in metro Detroit, The Children’s Center of Wayne County joins communities and organizations across the county in observing Mental Health Month and offering tools to combat stigma and discrimination against those with mental illness, especially children.

Stigma is an attempt to label a particular group of people as less worthy of respect than others. Stigma leads to fear, mistrust, and violence against people living with mental illness and their families; family and friends turning their backs on people with mental illness; and prejudice and discrimination.

With mental health and behavioral problems on the rise, The Children’s Center helps build strong children and communities by promoting mental health awareness, educating families and caregivers, and offering professional treatment and counseling services to children and families.

“Children and young adults with mental illness have unique challenges and needs, but they can build resilience to these trials with proper care and support,” says Carlynn Nichols, Chief Clinical Officer at The Children’s Center. “This is an opportunity to celebrate the positive impact we can have on the lives of young people, and help end the stigma associated with mental illness one child at a time.”

The annual Mental Health Month brings to light the importance of caring for every individual’s mental health and the positive impact it has on their lives. The Children’s Center is encouraging the metro Detroit community to become “Children’s Mental Health Advocates” and help to end the stigma associated with mental illness by spreading the message on social media:

Sharing is a way of breaking down negative attitudes and misperceptions surrounding mental illnesses, and is the first step to fighting mental illness stigma.
