James Simons, the billionaire former Stony Brook University math professor who made his money in a hedge fund he created, is to lead a media-only tour of the new state-of-the-art Simons Center for Geometry and Physics at Stony Brook on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in advance of its grand opening.

The center was developed with a $60 million gift from the Simons Foundation, which he heads along with his  wife , Marilyn, who holds a Ph.D. in economics from the the school.The foundation supports research and graduate education in mathematics and science. 

The university said the building would be used “to bring together mathematicians, in particular geometers, and theoretical physicists, to inform and learn from each other, and to work on problems of common interest in order to transform each discipline.”
