NAME Grammarly (grammarly.com)
WHAT IT IS The app bills itself as “the world’s most accurate grammar checker.”
COMPATIBLE WITH Firefox, Chrome and Safari browsers
HOW MUCH Free; premium edition from $11.66 a month
WHAT’S GOOD You don’t have to be a journalist or a student to use Grammarly. Download this extension to your browser and it will automatically check and correct your spelling and grammar wherever you write on the web, including email and social-media accounts. Add Grammarly to your browser, then create a free account with an email address and it will scan your web writing for five elements — contextual spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and style — in real time. (You can choose to keep any of these elements turned on or off). When you pause, you will be alerted to problems in your copy. If a word is misspelled, Grammarly will suggest the correct spelling, plus alternate words that are similarly spelled. Just click to make the correction. You can add words to your Grammarly dictionary and the app won’t question them again. Writing a term paper or resumé? Create it on Grammarly’s website or upload and review your existing documents. There is a free version of Grammarly that you can add to Microsoft Word and Outlook Mail, as well as one that can be used with Windows.
WHAT’S NOT When you create an account, you must agree “to receive product-related emails from Grammarly from which you can unsubscribe at any time.” When Grammarly is enabled on Microsoft Word, Word’s auto-save is disabled.
BOTTOM LINE Add polish to your posts and professional documents.
