Are icons overrunning your desktop wallpaper? Instead of deleting shortcuts for programs and documents, change the icon size and / or move things closer together.

1. Right click on your desktop and select Properties and then Appearance. Click on the Advanced button.

2. To make icons smaller, go to the drop-down menu under Item, and select Icon. Lessen the value in the Size field (you can change the size and style of the font beneath your icons here as well). Click OK.

3. Adjust grid spacing on the same drop-down menu by lessening size values for Icon Spacing (Horizontal) and / or Icon Spacing (Vertical). Click OK. Click Apply, then OK in next window. To activate changes, right click on desktop and select Arrange Icons By, then Align to Grid. Repeat to turn grid back on.
