The Lowdown: Foursquare is a social network that capitalizes on your device's ability to tag your current location by checking in at certain venues, receiving points, badges, and mayorships for checking in, and occasionally finding an offer at a venue checked in at. The iPhone app has grown leaps and bounds in only the last few months and the social network has become more than simply "being a mayor."

Pros: The interface features quick menus at the bottom allowing a user to switch between their friends, nearby venues, tips, and their profile rather quickly. A new recently added feature was a "friend map," which shows the last check-in of one's friends within the last three hours. The app, in a general sense, seems to flow from one option to another rather than quickly switching to the next page - an experience that makes using the app comfortable and natural.

Cons: The map feature lacks the ability to see friends who have checked in over three hours ago, which can be annoying since people don't always leave where they are under that timespan. Location has improved for those non-GPS enabled users, but remains iffy at best in certain areas. Background-enabled check-ins are surprisingly lacking, although present in the Android version of the app.

The Verdict: For the social networking-lover, this app is the hottest thing out there right now. With businesses like Starbucks, Chili's, and American Eagle stepping up to provide offers for mayors and those checking in at their locations, the network will continue to see growth. Not joining and having this app would be a huge loss on any iPhone user's part.
