BOTTOM LINE The game doesn’t always go like clockwork.
The third-person shooter Quantum Break combines live-action TV elements and gameplay for an unusual narrative mix. Everything kicks off unassumingly after protagonist Jack Joyce receives an invitation from his friend Paul Serene. The scientist has invented a time machine and he asks Jack to test it out. The experiment goes awry as Jack’s brother, William, interferes with the process and some commandos from the Monarch Solutions conglomerate storm the lab. Paul ends up stuck in the machine, and Jack inherits superhuman powers to control time. Worse yet, the incident creates a fracture in time that could destroy the world. Over the course of the campaign, players will have to uncover the mystery behind Monarch Solutions and seek out the Countermeasure, the one device that could fix everything. Quantum Break has an intriguing premise, but unfortunately, clunky gameplay mechanics and a convoluted plot hamper the game.
