NAME Scholly

WHAT An app to help you find college and postgraduate scholarships.

HOW MUCH $2.99

COMPATIBLE WITH Computers (myscholly.com), and mobile apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch (requires iOS 8.0 or later) and Android (requires OS 4.0 or later)

WHAT’S GOOD When Christopher Gray needed money to attend college, he did extensive Web research to find thousands of available scholarships, eventually winning $1.3 million that funded his education, books and living expenses. He put that research into an app called Scholly, to make the task easier for other students. According to Gray, there are 10,000 to 20,000 scholarships available and more than $100 million in aid goes unclaimed each year. After signing in, you answer questions on gender, race, GPA, state, grade level, need and/or merit based, plus miscellaneous factors, so Scholly’s algorithm can match you to scholarships that fit your parameters. Your matches (up to 200) can be searched by application deadline date or amount. Each scholarship has a link to its application site. It also can be saved to your personal list, which adds the scholarship’s application deadline to the dashboard calendar. Scholly also has sample essays users can refer to for ideas.

WHAT’S NOT App improvements have raised Scholly’s price from 99 cents to $2.99 since its inception, yet we received too many results where deadlines had already passed (more than 100, some with deadlines nearly a year old) or that didn’t match our parameters. We would have preferred to be able to search through all available scholarships in the app’s database.

BOTTOM LINE A smart way to help fund your education that could be made even better.
