Wegmans expanding closer to Long Island, headed to Brooklyn

Wegmans, which was named the best supermarket in the nation by Consumer Reports last month, is headed downstate.
The Rochester-based grocer announced Wednesday morning that it is planning a store in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Wegmans will anchor a $140 million redevelopment of the area's Admiral's Row. Work on the site, which also includes restoration of two historic structures, is expected to begin later this year, the company wrote in a release.
The store would be the iconic supermarket's first in New York City. It does not have one on Long Island.
Along with being highly ranked by its customers, Wegmans also earned top marks by employees, who helped place it as the ninth-best employer in the country, according to a Forbes report. Google topped that list.
Wegmans said it would initially hire 450 people in Brooklyn, including 150 full-time positions. The company added that it could expand the full-time positions to 250.
Wegmans operates 85 stores, 46 of which are in New York, according to the company's website. The company had $7.4 billion in sales in 2014 and has 44,000 employees.
